A message in a handphone

The nokia 3500 has served its master well, but the master...haih mou ngan tai. The master flung the handphone and it fell hard to the ground. The nokia 3500 can still speak but has lost vision.

"Gary we going to Cheong Foh to eat, then we go Centrepoint (Klang's, and a complex flooded and mini handphone shops) to repair your phone."

"We go to your schoolmate's shop la, that Chee, Chee, Chee, dunno what Chee already." (sounds so wrong in Hokkien)

"Chee Wei."

"Hes the boss of the shop adi now (in Chinese). HEHEHEHEHEHE (sharp laughter)"

"Huh boss adi ah? Thought the last time you guys went there hes just an employee?"

"Ya la he is, maybe promoted already, I don't know."

So my family went to eat at the kopitiam, and then we walked to Centrepoint. On the way, we passed by a handphone shop. I went in to ask how much is it to repair my poor nokia 3500's LCD screen, and that guy said more than 100, but he will only charge me 100 (pathetically lousy technique).

Anyway, we decided to walk to CP to see my old high school friend. He used to call me uncle last time, due to the fact that his young aunty is married to my old cousin (relatively). As i was going down the escalator, he saw me from afar with a surprise and a pleasant smile on his face, his hand waving to me. I smiled back.

"Yo, long time no see."

"Ya, how are you ah?"

"Good good, i am fine thank you. How much ah to repair my phone LCD?" (didnt strike me at that time, but now i feel guilty for not asking back how are you)

"Err wait ah, i call and ask first."

(Phone call)

"Eh lau peh, nokia sa gor kong kong eh LCD lua jue ah? Ka pi le, si wa eh beng yu. (Eh father, nokia 3500 LCD how much? Cheaper can ah, its my friend.)"

And now all the guilt struck me. Back at high school i remember, i wasnt really close to him. In fact, i didnt really like him. He borrows money and does not return. He took the next card from the deck during a blackjack game, in which the opponent will lose, and will have to pay me RM4 (5 cards pecah double), but it was because HE took it, the opponent defaulted it. Many small things in which he did, i disliked. BUT, he always showed me respect, he always talked nicely to me, and most importantly, he always treated me as a FRIEND. Now that i am older and i know how to think more rationally, i wondered why did my old me chose to only consider his small imperfections. Its not like i didnt know about his good traits. Even until now, he treats me as a friend, willing to ask for a discount for me, when i was at the back debating with my father whether he said Lau Peh (father) or Lau Eh (old one). What was i thinking...

"RM 60 loh Gary." (wah lau so much cheaper)

"Hmmm... Eh this phone looks not bad, how much ah? (Lol look at me, ppl offering me such a cheap price and i am still trying to act cool and trying to divert the fact that i know its damn cheap)"

"RM 400. This phone got three colours." (Arranging the phones together, still waiting for answer)

"RM 60 ah, ok lah. Must wait how long?"

"2 hours loh. Must send to the technician upstairs."

"Ok la later i come back."

Next scene happened 4 hrs later.

"My phone ok adi ah?"

"Err, errr (a bit of guilt over his face), five minutes can ah?"

"Oh can can, no problem."

...Short pause which lasted almost forever...Then he started the conversation.

"You still remember who is Chin Aik ah?"

"Ya, why?"

"He ran to Thailand adi."

"HAAR? Why?"

"Got one night right, he went clubbing. You know ma, clubbing sure drunk one. So that time he driving back with his Vios with his friend, then kena accident drop into long kang. The long kang not so deep la, but his friend died. So he have to run away loh, from the police."

Then the conversation lasted for the wait. I kept wondering why was it so hard for me to start a conversation with an old friend. Surely there should be many things you would wanna catch up on. But no, i couldnt. It was he who started the conversation. Maybe because i didnt treat him as a friend. Man, the guilt...

"Lau Peh, 3500 ho liao ber? (father, 3500 ok adi or not?) (Ha Ha confirm its his father liao.) Gary your phone ok adi, i go up and take."

I paid him RM 60, said thanks, and said goodbye. He stopped me and asked me for my phone number. Man! The guilt again! Why didnt i ask for his? Why was it he who asked me instead? Do i still not treat him as a friend? What was i thinking!@#$%&*?

After that i went for dinner with my family, and after dinner, i saw an amazing thing. A young boy hardly even standard six, performing magic. Sure, impressive...initially. After the magic trick, the father said "Want to learn? Pay money." What? We even have child labour in Malaysia? What a pathetic society we live in. Father abusing his son for cheap stuffs like this. At least now i know.

Today has been a fruitful day.

"Gary, wheres your 'hu'?"

"My amulet ah? Lazy to wear, always get tangled up with the metal chain i am wearing."

"But you should still wear it. See i put my amulet inside and the metal necklace outside, that way they don't get tangled up. Where did you put it?"

"Which home? KBU or our house?"

"Home home, on my bedside table."

"You should seriously wear it, if you are afraid that they get tangled up, put it in ur metal necklace then."

"Side by side with the energy pendant ah? So awkward."

"You know our house got that thing right?"

"Yeah, i experienced one myself before, have i told you?"

"Ya i know about yours, but do you know about mine?"

"Yeah i heard from mum before, the one where you saw a small kid standing outside your cupboard when you were sleeping, right?"

"No actually it was in the evening, i saw a reflection of a small kid on the cupboard glass door. I see already then i was like EH? Then i closed and opened my eyes again then its gone."

"What? Evening also got ah?"

"I told mum, then when we were all out on one day she brought a fortune teller home. The fortune teller said that there is a 'kid' in our house."

Now i recalled the incident a few years back where a new born baby of our neighbour's died. The baby died due to suffocation because one of the blankets was not placed properly and was covering the baby's face. The father was away on a business trip but rushed back home as soon as he got the news. When he got back, he cried so loudly that probably the whole floor could hear him. It was 4 am. The neighbour's house was directly across ours. The neighbours moved out after that, and we promised not to tell the coming new occupants of their house about this incident. Whether this incident had anything to do with the presence of the 'kid', i do not know. Maybe the baby ghost grew up? Even if its not this baby ghost, how did a 'kid' get in our house?

"Then what happened? Got chase away ah?"

"Got, but you know our house lah. So you must wear your 'hu', you know, just in case."

"Oh." (Nope sorry i am still too lazy to wear it)

Now i know my house is haunted. So far Sing Yong survived one night at my haunted house. Anyone else care to join?

Positive Thinking

Aren't you sick of people telling you to adopt positive thinking? Is it really that good? Do you even know what is positive thinking?

Positive thinking is simple. Basically it is just manipulating your thinking of something which is bad, and turning it into something good.

Simple yet difficult to adopt, to practise, to master. Many people are unable to have positive thinking. Someone once told me that positive thinking is self deceiving. It is true in a way.

See the thing about positive thinking is that we shouldn't look at it such that it is about the "thinking", but rather what comes with that "thinking". The mentality. The mentality that will keep you not only motivated, but determined, and having the right attitude at what you do. Assuming that you failed terribly at something, you would probably feel sad, disappointed, miserable, mulling over your failure, sulking at what you cannot achieve. However if you adopt positive thinking, you would treat it as a valuable experience, a priceless lesson in life. And with THIS thinking, you will continue to be enthusiastic at what you do, and continue to move on with life.

It is hard to get over failures, sometimes to the extent that you think its the end of the world. And these are the times when people are unable to move on with their lives, imprisoned and trapped inside their vessel of failure.

It doesn't matter if positive thinking is all about deception. Sometimes deceptions are what people need to inculcate the correct attitudes they should practise in life. Deceptions are what they need to straighten their senses and keep them on the right track, to continue moving on.

Are you the exception, or are you the rule?

Have you ever come across a situation where you keep wondering whether a boy or girl is interested in you or not?

Well usually, its really hard to tell. When you do encounter such a situation, you would usually want to read "signs". Signs like "oh he asked for my phone number! Hes gonna call me out again!" after your first date or "she everyday peek at me one leh!" or "he macam shy shy when he is in front of me..." The examples can go on and on...

However signs are often misinterpreted. People tend to manipulate the signs to convince themselves that the opposite party is interested in them. It is unfortunate but this is the human nature. And this often misleads people, which will end up in misery if the interest is one sided, or it may bring about joy! If both parties are interested.

And the thing is, when signs are manipulated and misinterpreted, you usually assume that you are the exception. When a guy asks for you phone number and doesn't call, you will think that "maybe he has lost my number, maybe he called but I didn't get the voicemail, or maybe he met with an accident..." What if that guy doesn't call because hes just not interested?

"Eh eh, she still peeking at me one leh, i think she really likes me larh~" (omg how desperate can he be). "Eh how come she stop peeking at me adi one! Maybe shes just shy..." What if she has been peeking at some other guy, or maybe even your friend sitting beside you, all along...

"Eh you know hor, that guy that I said he shy shy in front of me one, i think that guy really likes me leh. You see ah, he everyday macam around me one, but when hes really close to me, he macam want to avoid me leh. I think hes too shy to approach me wo, hehehehehhehe..." What if that guy being around you is just a coincidence, and that he really wants to avoid you, because he might think that you are interested in him and you are just not his type?

Exceptional assumptions, with exceptional scenarios, on your exceptional self... (Desperate? Pathetic?)

The one hard cold bitter truth is this, the rule rules in matters like this. If a guy is interested in you, he will call. If he wants to court you, he will do whatever it takes to make it work. If a girl likes you, she likes you and likewise.

However, is that really the truth? Rules are meant to be broken. So do we really have abide by the rules? Because if we do, then probably we will end up pushing all relationships away, destroying the slightest chances, the speck of possibilities.

Sometimes, it is these silly assumptions that spark relationships. Silly assumptions, which lead to a course of silly actions, which might make the opposite party realise that you are the one. So what if your assumptions are wrong? You might be wrong for this ONE assumption, but that doesn't mean ALL your assumptions are wrong.

If you found your special someone, he/she is your exception, your miracle. There is no rule. So allow your wild imagination to devour your conscience, let love in.

a strange encounter

Last night i was watched a damn good movie.

When i finished, it was already around 2.30 a.m. So i after i finished, i left my room. The living room was dark as usual. Everyone was asleep. And by dark i dont mean just dark, its spooky dark, because I live on the 12th floor and there is hardly any light, no street lights, no neighbours' houses lights etc etc. It is almost pitch black. The first thing i noticed was the living room fan was still on; hmmm strange, but not strange, because it is usual for my father/brother to forget to switch it off.

So i went to the kitchen to get a glass of water. While i was filling my cup with water, i heard a strange noise. I couldn't identify what was the noise, and where was it from, so i assumed that it was from outside the kitchen. Then i heard the same noise again, this time i confirmed it was from the living room. OK... what the hell. After i finished my glass of water, i decided to see what is this thingy making those funny noises. Ghost? Spirit? What the heck. So i switched on the living room lights and...

"EH! What the hell? Why u on the lights?" Lol my brother was sleeping in the living room. He mentioned earlier to me while i was watching the movie halfway that he couldn't sleep. So now he told me he slept in the living room because he couldn't sleep in his room.

Though this incident might seem usual, nothing paranormal about, but it is significant to me because my house feng shui very bad = (. Personally i have had an encounter with "something" when i was sleeping in the living room, which explains why i presumed that the noise had to be made by "something". And by "something" which i encountered in the past, that "something" is really "something", not just any "something"...

summer camppppp

I was supposed to post about the summer camp on friday, but i was so consumed by procrastination and the pilling up of maths homework given by our beloved Ms Kong. So today i woke up and decided to get it over with.

Summer camp was indeed amazing. Not only does it inculcate teamwork, it also allows students from different classes to be closer to one another. And most importantly, all participants had fun.

First there was the blind night, in which groups are lead to walk around the resort compound blind-folded. This shows how well teams are able to communicate among their team members as coordination plays a vital role in this activity.

Then where was the jungle trekking. One important concept i noticed here is the concept of bottlenecks. All 103 students must walk in only one line, thus if one person is slow, all the others behind can only pace at the slowest person's speed because they are not allowed to overtake, and those in front of this person will go right ahead, forming a gap. The analogy to a bottleneck is that the slowest person resembles the neck of the bottle, and all the other people behind resembles whats in the bottle, only being allowed to exit the bottle at the speed which the neck of the bottle allows. This concept is very important in the world of business especially in plants or factories, but if you want to know more, feel free to read the book "The Goal", by Eli Goldratt - the book that revolutionalized American business.

Also, during the jungle trekking, we were only allowed to call people by their assigned numbers, and we are forbidden to shout out names of animal, due to some "reasons". On the way up to the peak, yes everyone followed from 1 to 103. But on the way down, because it was so chaotic, most of us didnt bother and just went back down without following the assigned order. Some of the students were bitten by liches (lol); gugan's blood splattered onto his shirt when he removed the lich, and sarah only found out about the lich on her leg after we finished the jungle trekking (sry sarah haha).

There were also the performances, in which all groups were only given 40 minutes to prepare. To be honest, all the performances were spectacular, but i have to say, Zhaf's instrumental solo was the limelight of the night. His guitar tapping skills were amazing and it even impressed Mr Al the man himself haha.

Finally there was the explorace, the main event of the camp. It was certainly entertaining to all its participants, the way they communicate, the way the teams multi-task, and to what extent are they willing to perform those tasks, like to get their hair soaked with shampoo, or to jump into to pool and look for the correct balloons. In my opinion, the teamwork and determination of all the groups in finishing the explorace is really respectable. Even though some groups knew they couldnt win already, they still persisted and fought till the last minute. That is really admirable.

These are just some of the amazing events in which Mr Al and the committee put together in this year's wonderful summer camp. Not to mention the flying fox, hanging bridge, and the talk given by Mr Zafry. I would like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all the committee members and those who participated, and also to Mr Al, because without him, this summer camp would literally be nothing.

This summer camp has definitely left a wonderful memory for me.
